HIGH
ZERO 2002
SATURDAY
AFTERNOON:
SOUND/SHIFT II
Listen
to an MP3 of Ben Manley, Mike Cooper, and Hans Tammen
from Sound/Shift II The
Saturday matinee performance had an unusual
structure different from the rest of the
festival. Overlapping 20 minute "sets"
of musicians played; each "grouping"
overlapping in equal thirds at beginning
and end and has a center of 20 minutes with
just the group in question. This was based
on Sound/Shift,
a larger scale experience previously created
by John Berndt for Artscape '02 that has
subsequently been realized in Oakland and
Big sur by other groups of experimental
musicians.
The piece didn't end for 4 hours and 20
minutes(!)--the audience was free to come
and go over the course of the performance,
of course.
(Exceptions are the shorter first and last
groupings, who played for 40 minutes, instead
of 60 minutes).
