Sound Installations

High Zero Installation Opening Reception & Performances
Thursday Sept. 20th, 6PM
FREE!

This year the High Zero Festival features five major new works of sound-based art installation at Current Space. All are invited to the opening reception on September 20th starting at 6PM at 30 South Calvert Street. Food and beverages will be served.

This year's exhibition focuses on the visual as well as sonic possibilities of sound art. The artists we have invited to participate all have strong relationships to the material. The gallery will be filled with several interactive sound sculptures amplified throughout the space. In this way, the gallery itself becomes an instrument for visitors to play, the sounds being malleable and capable of innumerable combinations. The whole space will be a living piece of music open to the public to explore and experiment in the spirit of High Zero. Installations will be available for viewing from September 20th to October 2nd.

Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday, 11am - 3pm

Participating artists:

Laure Drogoul
"Frequencies for Darwin"
Laure Drogoul is a Baltimore native. She curates and hosts the 14kt Cabaret and is one of our home town heros of the arts. She was the recipient of the Sondheim Prize in 2006 and is tirelessly devising new curiosities for us to indulge our senses. Her recent works include explorations into the olfactory realm with her and "frequencies for Darwin" which she will be showing in the High Zero Sound Installations 2007.

Neil Feather
"Mom, Pet, and Drum Driver"

Neil Feather is an inventor of wonder-filled sound producing devices and a self proclaimed "sound mechanic". His work reveals the function of raw mechanics while simultaneously bewildering. Transforming what is familiar, a bowling ball, a spring, into the strange to delight the mind and ear. He is teaching a class in sound sculpture at MICA this year and recently displayed his work at ArtScape.

Dylan Hay
Untitled

Dylan Hay is a curator, musician and artist. He is a relatively new citizen of Baltimore and very welcome. Since his arrival he has been hosting worthwhile cultural events in locations around the city ranging from back yards in Hampden to the Maryland Art Place. His musical and artistic sensibilities emerge from invention and exploration while maintaining sincerity and contemplation. We shall see what he has in store for us.

Asa Osborne
"Group Music"

Asa Osborne is a painter, collagist, wood sculptor and guitarist. He is a founding member of the band Lungfish. His art work and music has a common theme which is attention to detail. His work focuses on craft. COMPLEX SIMPLICITY / SIMPLE COMPLEXITY will be his first sound installation.

Barbara Schauwecker
"Fingered Coral"

Barbara Schauwecker is a musician, clothing designer, and fabric sculptor living in New York City. Her work is fantastical as well as tactile, invoking the elves. She has toured traveling sonic theatre productions under the name Animental and often builds site-specific fabric works in remote locations; quiet meadows, mountain slopes, dewy fields. She will be using raw wool for her piece at Current Space.

Installations are located at:
