Three special sets that break the pattern of nightly performances in an attempt to redefine the undefinable.

Live Scores for Films from The Greatest City in America

A special screening of three ultra rare historical films about Baltimore City from the 16mm film archives of the Enoch Pratt Library. These films are not digitized or regularly screened so this will most likely be a one-time cinema experience! For this special screening original film soundtracks will be replaced by live improvised music. Curated by Tom Boram & Bonnie Jones.

Program 1:

Market (Cross Street)

(1980, 10 minutes, 16mm)

This short documentary shows a typical day in the life of the bustling Cross Street Market in Federal Hill in 1980. Merchants selling fresh fish, slicing pastrami, and polishing produce give a taste of the unique movement of a city market.

Dantini the Magnificent (Fells Point)

Director, Chris Buchman, Jr.; music, Rex Schneider. (Chris Buckman, 1968, 17 minutes, 16mm)

The film homage depicts the muted, fanciful life of magician Vincent Cierkes -- "Dantini the Magnificent" -- who lived in Fells Point in the late 1960s. A simple and contemplative film that follows the charismatic Dantiti as he plays with the pigeons in his apartment, entertains some local children, and shops at markets on Broadway and East Baltimore.

MUSICIANS:

Alvin Fielder (percussion) Jackson, MS

Susan Alcorn (pedal steel guitar)

Christina Blomberg (tenor saxophone)

Program 2:

A Carnival of the Ugly

Writer and producer, George Gipe; photographer, Charles Purcell; narrator, Stu Kerr. (WMAR-TV, 1967, 26 minutes, color, 16mm)

This WMAR-TV documentary from 1967 explores the various forms of urban pollution that afflict the natural environment of Baltimore City's metro area. Despite its serious message, beautifully framed landscape shots and carefully edited montages of urban reality offer a compelling and visually aesthetic delight.

MUSICIANS:

Jaimie Branch (trumpet)

Walter Kitundu (inventions) San Francisco

Magda Mayas (clavinet, piano) Berlin

Will Schorre (modular synthesizer)

Sabine Vogel (flute, electronics) Potsdam, Berlin

Just Waves

Matmos will perform their 8 voice chorale for humans and electronics. "Just Waves" is based on the results of their extensive tests into psychic phenomenon. The piece will be performed with audience members and participants from the local musical community.

Improvisation Minus Music
In 2005, we tasked five brave improvisors to put down their instruments and perform. Watching them interact in such muscial ways without sound was one of the most amazing improvisations we've seen. It was so good, we decided to do it again this year, bigger and more exciting.
